Description:Burslem pottery manufacturers Enoch Wood & Sons, and others, here react angrily to a spate of false advertisments, touting cheap wares at prices said to be agreed by all Staffordshire manufacturers.

Responding to events, the manufacturers state that:

"They do not consider their time idly spent when protecting their business, and thwarting the designs of those who might wish to injure it, by holding out to the Public the alluring bait of "a superior article at lower prices than anyone in the market.""

Agent Robert Anderson (an unknown in the small world of the pottery business) comes in for some severe criticism:

"He recommends us to bridle our temper, when nothing but good humour has appeared in any of our productions."

They then reciprocate the sentiment by refusing to honour him with a proper reply:

"As Robert Anderson has thought proper to point some of his remarks more particularly to ENOCH WOOD, SONS & WOOD, than to the other two Houses, for reasons unknown to them, they give him to understand that their station in the Commercial and Manufacturing World is such as will not allow them to descend to honour him with their attention, or to indulge him with any other reply than that of saying, he is beneath their notice."
