Description:Entertainment in Burslem

Programme for a concert taking place at Burslem Town Hall in October 1805.

The concert goers were to be treated to an eclectic selection of instrumental music and songs by European composers such as Handel (1685-1759), Ditters (1739-1799) and Pleyel (1757-1831).

Some of this music would have been well established, such as the Handel compositions but some was also contemporary for its time. Pleyel was still composing.

This period, in musical terms, is often referred to as late classical.

The event would have been attended by the wealthier classes.

Format of the concert

The concert was staged in two halves with a Hunting Duet in the intermission.

Proceedings ended with the national anthem.

The first Town Hall

Burslem to date has had three town hall buildings. This concert took place in the first, which was built in around 1761.
