Description:A meeting is to be held at Hanley Market Hall on Wednesday 5 February 1794, at 11am.

A new House of Industry?

Gentlemen in the local parishes of Stoke-upon-Trent, Burslem and Wolstanton have agreed upon the need for a House of Industry in the Potteries.

This institution would house the sick and elderly, and distribute poor relief to those in need. This practice was known as 'outdoor relief,' contrasting with the 'indoor relief' supplied by workhouses in the last resort.

Men attending the meeting are to discuss a Bill prepared for Parliament. The intention is to 'alter, amend, comfirm and fettle the Clauses thereof.'
