Description:A man and boy, perhaps father and son, pose beside the gates at Rushton level crossing, in around 1960. The man is believed to be the signalman Ernie Harlow, who later moved from Rushton when that box closed in 1963 to Mow Cop where he remained until his retirement.
For many years most busy crossings were constantly manned, and controlled by wooden swing gates.
Both sets of gates were marked with a large red circle for visibility, which can clearly be seen in this photograph. The station is now a private dwelling.
