Description:The Trent and Mersey Canal, begun in 1766, had become big business by the end of the 18th century.
Its owners were concerned about ensuring an adequate supply of water to the canal, and had applied to Parliament for a bill that would enable them to build a new reservoir near Leek.
The first bill, however, was defeated.
In this declaration, signed by chairman James Falconer, the company announces its intention to seek a new bill in the next session of Parliament.
An 168-hectare reservoir was eventually completed at Rudyard in 1797.
