Description:View of Trentham Garden's outdoor swimming pool on a busy day.

The pool was built in the 1920s and was demolished in the 1980s.

Trentham Gardens estate was home and pleasure gardens to the Dukes of Sutherland from the seventeenth to the early twentieth century. The family abandoned the property and the grounds were then opened to the public.

Remembering Trentham Gardens

Clients from Beaumaris Court in Newcastle-under-Lyme remember the long but rewarding walk from Longport for visits to Trentham Gardens:

"They used to have a little train.

"In the park, adjoining Trentham Gardens, you could go in there free at the time. And I used to take my grandchildren there. And there used to be a little stream. All the little kiddies used to paddle in there.

"The shops were very kind, if you'd got a big family. In Longport, there was a butcher, Mr Wardle. He used to do all his own baking and cooking. On a weekend, if he had any meat and potato pies left, he used to give my mother about a half a dozen. They were beautiful. They were happy times.

"Then we used to go through Newcastle and down London Road, and made our way towards Trentham Gardens. But by gum, did we enjoy it! And to think we had to walk all the way back.

"It's different now. Still lovely now, I believe. I used to go as a child, Trentham Thursday. Used to have to walk it there and back. It took a while, it must have taken near on an hour.

"We used to go through Trent Vale. We used to take the bottles home."
