Description:Postcard showing cup handlers at work in the Potteries, Staffordshire.

On the reverse of the post card it is stated that the image was taken in 1886. However, this date is too early. Blake was not born until the 1870s. It is estimated that this image was taken right about the turn of the century. The early dating was possibly designed to give the postcard added nostalgic appeal.

Elsewhere in the collection is a slide, which was part of a presentation entitled "Staffordshire Pottery". The reader card that corresponds to cup handling reads;

"Handling. Handles formed separately are fastened on when required with slip as an adhesive."

Note: At certain magnifications a patterning effect will appear on this image due the nature of the original.
